Range Rover Evoque production starts in Chennai, will be sold in India as well as foreign markets

Range Rover Evoque production starts in Chennai, will be sold in India as well as foreign markets

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, has started its new greenfield manufacturing plant at Panapakkam in Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu from today i.e. 9 February 2026. This plant was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin did this in the presence of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Chairman N Chandrasekaran.

This plant is located in Sipcot Industrial Park and has been developed with an investment of ₹9,000 crore (about US$994 million). Construction work started in September 2024. This is Tata Motors' fifth passenger vehicle manufacturing plant in India, which includes two in Sanand, Gujarat, one in Pune and a joint plant with Jeep in Ranjangaon.

2.5 lakh vehicles will be made in a year!

This plant has an annual production capacity of 2.5 lakh units and will produce next generation models. This will include models of both Tata Motors and JLR. The plant is designed for the production of Electric Vehicles (EV), focusing on sustainable and future-ready manufacturing. This is the first plant to produce luxury models of JLR in India.

Range Rover Evoque rolled out

During the inauguration, the first vehicle, the locally assembled Range Rover Evoque, rolled out from the assembly line of the plant. Chief Minister Stalin himself drove this vehicle for a short distance, with Chandrasekaran accompanying him. This plant is important for the automotive sector in India, as Tamil Nadu is now the sixth major automaker of Tata-JLR after Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, BMW, VinFast.

Price and features

The Range Rover Evoque is the most accessible model in JLR's lineup, priced at ₹64.86 lakh, ex-showroom India. It is available with two engine options. The first one is P250 petrol mild hybrid (2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo, 247 hp, 365 Nm) and the second is 2.0-litre turbo diesel (201 hp, 430 Nm) engine.

Both have automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and terrain response system with mild-hybrid technology. Features include 11.4-inch Pivi Pro infotainment, panoramic sunroof, Meridian sound system, wireless charging, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto etc.

Will prices decrease?

Earlier the Range Rover Evoque was completely imported (CBU), which attracted heavy import duty. Now with the start of local production through CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembly, the import duty will be reduced, which will reduce the production cost. This may reduce the ex-showroom price by 10-20%. However, the company has not yet made any official announcement regarding this.

In this way the on-road price of the vehicle will become ₹ 12,49,042.

Bonus Tip: If you are looking for a 5-seater SUV for family, office commuting or daily use, then Hyundai Creta can be a better option. You can easily avail EMI by giving a down payment of Rs 2-3 lakh.

Our advice is that if you earn 60-80 thousand rupees per month and are not paying any big loan installments at present, then only plan to bring it home with a car loan. Getting a loan at a good interest rate will depend on your monthly earnings and credit score.

Ford Endeavor

Ford India has taken an important step towards its comeback in the Indian market. According to special sources, the company is preparing to restart production at its Chennai-based Maraimalai Nagar plant from June 2026. This plant was closed after Ford stopped vehicle production from India in 2021, when the company decided to leave India due to continuous losses and low market share. At that time Ford had sold the Sanand plant to Tata Motors, but kept the Chennai plant with itself.

Now Ford is reviving the plant, but the focus is on producing high-end engines rather than vehicles, which will be mainly for export. According to reports, the company is going to invest approximately Rs 3,250 crore (about 370 million dollars). The plant will have an annual capacity of around 2.35 lakh engines and production is expected to start full-scale by 2029. However, the process will start from June 2026.

Ford will start work again

Ford had stopped vehicle production from India in 2021 after canceling the proposed joint venture with Mahindra, due to which popular models like EcoSport, Endeavor were discontinued. However, now the company's strategy has changed. Some reports suggest that Ford may make a comeback in India with premium vehicles, such as the Endeavor (Everest) and Ranger pickups, which can be imported as CBU (Completely Built Unit). These models can compete with rivals like Toyota Fortuner.

Will Ford Endeavor make a comeback?

At present Ford's strategy is completely export-focused. The company has clarified that there are no plans for vehicle assembly or domestic sales in India. Endeavor (known globally as Everest) was also reported last year as a CBU import or locally assembled project, but now these plans are on hold due to EV strategy, global tariff war and company priorities. Many reports say that Endeavor's comeback is uncertain and the focus is on EV development and export.

However, given Ford's strong engineering base in India (12,000 employees in Chennai) and fan demand, the situation may change in the future. For now, Endeavor lovers will have to wait, as the company's primary goal is to strengthen the global supply chain and not an immediate return to the Indian market. This step is in the direction of making India an important manufacturing hub for Ford.

Cars like Alto, Celerio and S-Presso will become expensive! Will not get exemption from government

Cars like Alto, Celerio and S-Presso will become expensive! Will not get exemption from government

The Government of India has completely canceled the proposed exemption for small cars in the upcoming fuel efficiency standard rules. According to an exclusive report by Reuters, the Power Ministry has removed the special relief for petrol cars weighing 909 kg or less in the latest 41-page draft of CAFE-III (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency Phase-3).

This decision was taken after opposition from other automakers including Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, who argued that this exemption would benefit only one company (Maruti Suzuki). Come, let us know how the new rule will work now and why was it benefiting only Maruti Suzuki?

Shock to Maruti Suzuki!

Maruti Suzuki holds about 95% share in India's small car market. An earlier draft dated September 2025 proposed additional relaxation in the fuel efficiency target for petrol cars weighing less than 909 kg, as there was limited scope for efficiency improvement.

This relaxation was justified for small cars (length less than 4 meters, engine capacity up to 1200 cc). But companies like Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai and JSW MG Motor said it was inequitable as it would give Maruti an unfair advantage and harm the national goals of EV adoption.

What's in the New Testament?

Along with removing these exemptions, other parameters have also been tightened in the new draft. Weight-based over-compensation will be prevented, so that there is equal competition between light and heavy cars. The transport sector accounts for a major share of India's total petroleum consumption and CO₂ emissions.

The new rules will come into effect from April 2027 and will last till 2032. The aim is to significantly reduce fleet-average emissions. According to some estimates, it will be reduced by 91.7 grams CO₂/km. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to $550 per car.

Emphasis on EV and hybrid

These changes will increase pressure on all vehicle manufacturers to increase sales of electric and hybrid vehicles. This is a big blow for Maruti Suzuki, because many of their entry-level models (like Alto, Celerio) were dependent on this discount. The company has already said that without relief, production of small cars may become difficult. At the same time, companies like Tata and Mahindra are strong in the EV segment.

The move is part of India's green transportation policy, which focuses on accelerating EV adoption by 2030. However, this may affect the availability of affordable small cars, which are the best option for the middle class. The auto industry is now shifting investments towards EV, hybrid and advanced engine technologies.
