Maruti Suzuki Swift has now emerged as the car of the future with a hydrogen engine, not petrol or CNG. This car releases only water from the tail pipe and shows a new direction of green mobility. Know its technology, features and possibilities of India launch.

Suzuki Swift Hydrogen has been showcased.

Suzuki Motor Corporation and mobility technology company AVL have introduced the Suzuki Swift as a technology demonstrator with a hydrogen engine at the 2026 Vienna Motor Symposium. With the global level, the popular hatchback Swift in the Indian market can now enter the market with a new energy source.

Traditional hydrogen vehicles run on fuel cell technology, where hydrogen is converted into electricity to run the motor. But in this new prototype, power is being generated by burning hydrogen directly in the engine. AVL's new Hydrogen DI Technology has been used in the Suzuki-based 1.4 liter 4-cylinder Hydrogen DI engine.

Engine and Performance

This engine can run in both lean and stoichiometric (Lambda=1) modes. Better performance is achieved in stoichiometric mode through cooled EGR. This powertrain is capable of producing approximately 100 kW (approximately 135 hp) power and 220 Nm torque. This technology solves common problems of hydrogen engines such as unstable combustion and provides high power density, stable operation and scalable solutions. Drivability and emissions have been fully calibrated, making it production ready.

Design and features

The design of Swift remains attractive and sporty. The compact hatchback body attracts young buyers with its sharp lines, bold front grille and modern LED lighting. The interior is premium and driver-focused. Improved materials, soft-touch dashboard, modern digital instrument cluster and large touchscreen infotainment system with available Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, which is perfect for daily commuting.

Features include wireless charging, steering mounted controls, good sound system and multi-mode driving option. Swift has always been strong in terms of safety. Expected features may include multiple airbags, ABS, EBD, stability control, rear parking sensors and possible ADAS systems. Safety standards have been kept high in the hydrogen version too, especially the hydrogen storage tanks have been kept safe.

fuel efficiency

Talking about fuel efficiency, hydrogen engine gives excellent efficiency with zero carbon emissions. Only water comes out from the tail pipe, making it an excellent alternative to green fuel.

India launch?

Maruti Suzuki Swift is already a bestseller in India. The central government and Nitin Gadkari are promoting green fuels like hydrogen. Hydrogen station is already running at Kochi Airport. If the infrastructure is developed then this Hydrogen Swift can be launched in India. This can prove to be a sustainable choice among petrol, CNG and electric options.

This luxury car coming to India has become cheaper by Rs 75 lakh, effect of FTA with Britain

Last Updated:

JLR New Price: The effect of the free trade agreement between India and Britain is beginning to be visible. The price of Jaguar Range Rover car made in Britain has been reduced by Rs 75 lakh in India. The company has said that the prices of its two models have been reduced the most.

Zoom

Jaguar Land Rover prices have been reduced by Rs 75 lakh.

New Delhi. When India and Britain signed the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) recently, it was decided that movement of products between the two countries would now become cheaper. Its result has also come to light. The price of Jaguar Range Rover, a luxury car coming from Britain, has now become cheaper in India by not just Rs 2 lakh, but by Rs 75 lakh. This car is completely manufactured in Britain and imported into India. Now this car can be brought at a cheaper price.

The Indian unit of luxury vehicle manufacturing company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) said that in view of the possibility of implementation of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), it has announced a reduction of up to Rs 75 lakh in the prices of Range Rover models manufactured in Britain. JLR India said the main beneficiaries of the price cut for vehicles coming to India as fully built units will be the Range Rover SV and Range Rover Sport SV models.

Now what will be the price of both the cars?
After this deduction, the starting showroom price of Range Rover SV model has reduced from Rs 4.25 crore to Rs 3.5 crore. Apart from this, the price of Range Rover Sport SV model has been reduced from Rs 2.75 crore to Rs 2.35 crore. The Tata Group-controlled company said that the revised prices reflect the new duty structure under the FTA and will be applicable with immediate effect.

Company expects sales to increase
JLR India Managing Director Rajan Amba said that amidst the expectation of implementation of India-UK FTA, we are committed to providing its benefits to our customers. The new prices reflect our approach of putting the customer first and commitment to building long-term relationships. However, the company clarified that this FTA will have no impact on the prices of locally manufactured models in India such as Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Discovery Sport.

The prices of these models will not decrease
The company has said that some of its models are not made in Britain. Therefore, the rules of India-UK Free Trade Agreement will not be applicable on them and their prices will remain at the old level in the Indian market. The company said that the prices of its models like Defender and Discovery will remain at their old level. Both these models are produced in Slovakia, due to which they will remain out of the scope of FTA.

  • The base variant has less features, so choose Pure or Adventure variant.
  • Initial batches may have fit-finish or some minor niggles.
  • The price is a bit aggressive, but competitive considering the features and space.

Who should avoid?

If you just want a budget SUV (₹10-12 lakh) with limited features, or are looking for sporty performance and AWD, then you would be better off looking at Creta/Seltos or other options. It is also not the best for a pure off-roader. Apart from this, it is also not going to be a good option for a big family.

Final Verdict: Tata Sierra is the perfect choice for those who want style, space, safety and a premium experience all in one, without spending too much. Family use, safety-conscious buyers and those who like the iconic look should definitely consider it. Take a test drive, choose the variant and engine as per your requirement. Overall, this is a solid package from Tata.

Forget petrol! Twin CNG kit will be available in Nissan Gravite, price is only ₹ 82,999

Nissan has launched a twin-cylinder CNG retrofitment kit for its new 7-seater car Gravite. Developed by Motozen, this ICAT approved and BS6 Phase 2 compliant kit comes with two cylinders of 25 liters each (total 50 liters water equivalent), which completely retains the third row seating.

The introductory price is only ₹ 82,999, which will be fitted at authorized dealerships. It is available in 60 cities and 16 states. The kit comes with a third-party warranty of 3 years/1 lakh km. It is safe and efficient with a heavy-duty 8.1mm wall cylinder and dynamic advancer technology. After this kit, the claimed mileage is expected to be up to 22-24 KMKG. Let's take a look at the details from design to engine and performance.

Design and interior

The piano black 2D grille at its front is attractive with aero accents. Signature LED headlamps, wrist edge LED tail lamps and dual-tone R15 flex wheels give it road presence. The 182 mm ground clearance is suitable for Indian roads. The overall design is family-oriented. Bold but practical, with modular seating and good boot space (with/without third row). The twin tanks of the CNG kit are vertically stacked, which minimally impacts the boot space and third row.

The cabin is spacious, versatile and has a premium feel. It can be purchased with dual-tone black-beige or ivory-blue theme. The second row seats can slide, recline, fold and tumble-down. The third row is 50:50 split removable, which gives boot space up to 625 liters in 5-seater mode. There are AC vents in all three rows, good headroom-legroom and smart storage options.

Features and safety

Talking about the features, features like wireless charger, ambient lighting, neck and lumbar cushion are available in its top variants. Apart from this, 8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, 7-inch digital cluster, JBL speakers, dual dash cam, air purifier, auto LED headlamps, wipers, cruise control, steering mounted controls, rear camera and front-rear parking sensors are also available.

Nissan has left no stone unturned in safety. Customers can buy it with standard 6 airbags (front, side, curtain). Apart from this, 30+ active and passive features include ESP, TCS, HSA (Hill Start Assist), ABS with EBD, rear seat belt reminders and TPMS. Having curtain airbags coverage till the third row is a strong point in the segment.

Engine and Performance

Gravite has a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder NA petrol engine (B4D), which produces 72 PS of power and 96 Nm torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT (EZ-Shift) transmission. ARAI mileage in petrol is 19.3 kmpl (MT) and 19.6 kmpl (AMT). Power may be slightly reduced in CNG kit (MT-only), but mileage will increase.

Range Rover has received a price cut.

Passing on the benefits of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) India has cut the prices of its luxury SUV Range Rover SV models. The starting price of the flagship Range Rover SV has now come down from ₹ 4.25 crore to ₹ 3.50 crore (ex-showroom), which means a saving of ₹ 75 lakh. Also, the price of Range Rover Sport SV Edition Two has reduced from ₹ 2.75 crore to ₹ 2.35 crore. Its price has also been reduced by ₹ 40 lakh.

Apart from this, a new base Sport SV variant has also been launched for ₹ 2.05 crore. This reduction is a direct benefit of the reduced duty on CBU models imported from the UK (from 110% to around 30% in the first year). Earlier, due to GST reforms in September 2025, the prices had also reduced by ₹ 30 lakh. JLR is the first luxury brand, which is extending the benefits of FTA to the customers. The new prices are effective immediately, making the high-end luxury SUV segment more attractive.

Design and interior

The Range Rover SV has a modern and reductive exterior design. The exclusive front grille, bumper, contrasting Range Rover script and SV ceramic roundel distinguish it. 23-inch wheels, LED headlights and sleek profile give it premium road presence. Both space and presence increase in the long wheelbase (LWB) version.

The cabin is ultra-luxury. It gets Semi-Aniline or Near-Aniline leather upholstery, exclusive dual-tone color schemes (like Caraway/Perlino), 24-way adjustable heated-ventilated seats with hot stone massage and executive class rear seats. High-quality materials, embroidery and sensory flooring take comfort to the next level. Rear passengers get a luxury lounge like experience.

Features and safety

Talking about the features, the list includes Meridian Signature Sound System, 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment, head-up display (HUD), 4-zone climate control, 3D surround camera, remote park assist, seats with memory function and multiple drive modes. For safety, ADAS suite has been provided with 6 airbags, ESP, traction control, TPMS, ABS. Strong body structure and advanced driver assistance systems ensure safety both at high-speed and off-road.

Engine and Performance

Its SV variant has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol mild-hybrid engine, which gives 606 bhp power and 750 Nm torque. It can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds and its top speed is 261 km/h. Dynamic launch mode is available with 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD system. There is also an advanced suspension and terrain response system for off-roading, making it a perfect combination of performance and luxury.

Not Thar or Gurkha, this SUV is the real king of the mountains! Know the price and features

Not Thar or Gurkha, this SUV is the real king of the mountains! Know the price and features

It is very important to choose the right SUV for adventure driving on hilly roads, wet mud, rocks and high climbs in places like Uttarakhand, Himachal and Ladakh. Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny, all three are made for off-roading with ladder-frame chassis, low-range 4×4 and strong builds.

Thar is a blend of lifestyle and versatility, Gurkha is known for pure ruggedness, while Jimny is compact and agile. If you are planning to buy a good and affordable adventure SUV in the coming days, then this article of ours is useful for you. We have brought for you information related to these three SUVs.

Mahindra Thar

Mahindra Thar is the most popular option. 226 mm ground clearance, 41°+ approach angle, 36° departure angle and good breakover angle make it reliable on hilly roads. Options are available with 2.2L diesel (130 bhp, 300-320 Nm) or 2.0L petrol engine with 4×4, rear diff lock and automatic.

The Thar is comfortable in the city too, with good features and the 5-door Roxx variant is perfect for family use. Balanced ride on tough roads and powerful torque makes climbing easy at low RPM. However, in some cases body roll is felt. Its starting ex-showroom price is Rs 9,99,500.

Maruti Jimny

Maruti Jimny is the compact king. With 210 mm ground clearance, superior articulation (solid axle on both sides), 36° approach and 47-50° departure angles, it is most agile on tight mountain trails and narrow paths. ALLGRIP Pro 4×4 with 1.5L petrol (103 bhp) and low-range system is easy for beginner off-roaders. The light weight and small size (1645 mm wide) makes it fun to ride on winding mountain roads. But due to less power, maintaining momentum on long climbs can be challenging. Its ex-showroom price starts from ₹ 12.32 lakh.

Force Gurkha

Force Gurkha is the most hardcore off-roader. With 233 mm ground clearance, 700 mm water wading, front-rear diff locks and 2.6L diesel engine (138 bhp, 320 Nm), it is made for extreme terrain. Gurkha's gradeability of 35° and robust build is unmatched on dangerous mountain roads, deep rivers and mud. More space is available in 5-door variant. It is best for pure adventure and military-style users, but comfort is less on the road. Its starting ex-showroom price is Rs 16,30,910.

Our advice: If you want balanced performance, comfort and daily use then Mahindra Thar is best. For pure extreme off-roading and reliability, the Force Gurkha is unbeatable. Jimny will be ideal for narrow trails and fun driving. Prices range around Rs 12-18 lakh. Before choosing any of the three, check your budget and take a test drive.

EV vs Petrol: Before buying a new SUV, know the mathematics of real running cost for 5 years.

EV vs Petrol: Before buying a new SUV, know the mathematics of real running cost for 5 years.

Which is better to buy between Hyundai Creta and Creta EV? This question is revolving in the minds of many buyers these days, especially in cities where traffic, pollution and fuel prices are daily concerns. The Hyundai Creta is one of the most popular mid-size SUVs in India, while the Creta EV is the company's first mass-market electric SUV built on the same platform.

Talking about the price, the base petrol variant of Hyundai Creta starts at around ₹ 10.73 lakh ex-showroom, while the top variant goes for around ₹ 20 lakh. On the other hand, the base model (42 kWh battery) of the Creta EV starts at ₹18.02 lakh ex-showroom, while the long range (51.4 kWh) variants go for ₹20-24.5 lakh. Let us know which of these two would be a more profitable deal to buy?

Performance and driving experience

The Creta petrol comes with a 1.5 liter naturally aspirated or turbo engine, which is smooth but may seem a little sluggish in city traffic. ARAI mileage is around 17-18 kmpl, but in real world it gets 10-13 kmpl in city and 15-18 kmpl on highway. In cities like Delhi-NCR, it would be fine if we assume an average of 12 kmpl with AC, traffic and load.

The electric motor in the Creta EV delivers instant torque (255 Nm), making 0-100 km/h acceleration faster than the petrol version. Driving is silent, smooth and fun. ARAI claimed range is 420-510 km (42/51.4 kWh battery). In real world tests, we get 8.5-9.5 km/kWh in the city and 7-8 km/kWh on the highway, which means 400-450 km range is easily achieved in mixed use. Fast charging (50 kW DC) takes 10-80% in just 58 minutes, while a home 11 kW AC charger takes 4-5 hours.

5 Year Running Cost Calculation (Approximately 15,000 KM/Year)

The price of petrol in Delhi-NCR is around ₹ 95-96 per liter in April 2026. Considering the average real world mileage as 12 kmpl, the figures will be as follows-

  • Cost per KM: ₹95.5/12= ₹7.96/km
  • Annual running cost (15,000 km): ₹1,19,400
  • Total fuel cost for 5 years: Approx ₹5,97,000

For Creta EV, let us assume an average domestic electricity rate in Delhi-NCR of ₹ 6-8 per unit (depending on the slab). If we keep real world efficiency at 8.4 km/kWh (mixed use), then the figures will be something like this-

  • Cost per KM: ₹7/8.4= ₹0.83/km
  • Annual charging cost: ₹12,450
  • Total expenditure for 5 years: Approximately ₹62,250

Saving in running costs

EV will save around ₹5.35 lakh on petrol Creta in 5 years. The savings increase further if you drive more (20,000 km/year). If you charge ₹ 12-15/unit at office parking or public charger, the benefit of EV reduces slightly, but still remains below ₹ 3-4/KM.

EV is also ahead in maintenance. In a petrol car, the cost of service, oil change, timing chain/belt, clutch etc. is incurred every 10,000 KM. From ₹ 80 thousand to 1.2 lakh in 5 years. There are less moving parts in EV, only the cost of brake pads, tires and suspension is incurred. Battery warranty is usually up to 8 years/1.6 lakh KM. Total maintenance can be reduced by 40-60% in EV. Besides, these factors are also very important-

  • Residual Value: The petrol Creta may offer better resale value after 5 years, but the EV market is still developing and there are concerns about battery degradation.
  • Practicality: Creta EV also has almost the same space and features, but range will be a concern. Petrol is better in rural or remote areas.
  • Environment and Tax: EV is a vehicle with zero emissions and reduces pollution. EVs get exemption in road tax and registration.
  • Driving Pleasure: EV is more fun than instant torque and silence. Engine noise and vibration are more in petrol.

Total 5 Year Ownership Cost

  • Creta Petrol: Purchase (on-road) ₹15 lakh + Fuel ₹6 lakh + Maintenance ₹1 lakh + Insurance = ₹22.5-23.5 lakh.
  • Creta EV: Purchase ₹22-24 lakh + Charging ₹0.65 lakh + Maintenance ₹0.4 lakh + Insurance = ₹24-26 lakh.

The EV's huge savings in running and maintenance cover the initial price gap in 4-5 years. If you are going to keep it for more than 5 years or drive 40-50 KM+ daily, then EV is cheaper. Petrol will be better for low running (10,000 km/year) or frequent long trips, as it does not worry about range.

Buy a car or ride with Ola/Uber, what is right? Understand with 5 year calculation

Buy a car or ride with Ola/Uber, what is right? Understand with 5 year calculation

Private Car vs Cab: Daily commuting is a big challenge for professionals living in areas like Delhi-NCR. Between city traffic, parking problems and lack of time, many people wonder whether it is better to buy a car or rely on ride-hailing services like Ola/Uber.

This decision mainly depends on your monthly distance, budget and lifestyle. Let us understand the detailed calculation for 5 years based on the current data of 2026 (petrol around ₹ 100/litre, Delhi-NCR rates). Will you try to know whether it would be right to buy a new car or is booking a cab a better option?

How much does it cost to get your car

Suppose you buy a mid-budget petrol car, like Maruti Swift or Hyundai Grand i10, whose on-road price is around Rs 8.5 lakh. If you drive 15,000 kilometers annually, the total will be 75,000 kilometers in five years. In this, fuel cost will be around Rs 5 to 5.25 lakh, insurance 80 thousand to 1 lakh, servicing and maintenance 50-75 thousand, tire-battery etc. will cost additional Rs 40-60 thousand.

Out of the purchase price of the car of Rs 8.5 lakh, the resale value after five years will be around Rs 4.5 lakh and the loss of depreciation will be around Rs 4 lakh. Thus, the total net expenditure can reach Rs 9.5 to 12 lakh in 5 years. This makes the effective cost per kilometer around Rs 18-22 per km for a distance of 15,000 km annually. The 5 year car ownership cost will be like this-

  • Purchase price: ₹8.5 lakh
  • Resale value after 5 years: Around 50-60% remains, i.e. ₹4-5 lakh.
  • Fuel Cost (15,000 km/year × 5 = 75,000 km): ₹6.6-7 per KM, total ₹5-5.25 lakh.
  • Insurance: ₹25-30k in the first year, later reducing to an average of ₹15-20k/year – ₹80k-1 lakh in 5 years.
  • Servicing/Maintenance: ₹8,000-15,000/year. ₹50,000-75,000 in 5 years.
  • Tyres, Battery, Miscellaneous + Parking/Toll: ₹40,000-60,000.
  • Total 5 year net cost (minus resale): ₹9.5-12 lakh (short distance) to ₹11-14 lakh (long distance).
  • Cost per KM: ₹18-25/KM at 12,000 KM/year and ₹12-16/KM at 20,000 KM/year.

Ola/Uber commuting calculations

If you completely depend on Ola or Uber, the average cost in Delhi-NCR is Rs 15-18 per kilometer (including surge pricing). For the same distance of 15,000 kilometers annually, the annual expenditure will be Rs 2.25 to 2.7 lakh, which reaches Rs 11.25 to 13.5 lakh in five years.

If your annual distance is 10,000 kilometers or less, then the total cost of Ola-Uber can be around Rs 8 to 10 lakh, which is cheaper than buying a car. At the same time, for those who drive 20,000 kilometers annually, the cost of car becomes much less than Ola-Uber.

  • Average ₹15-18/km (including surge, waiting, taxes).
  • 15,000 km/year: ₹2.25-2.7 lakh annually and ₹11.25-13.5 lakh in 5 years.
  • 20,000 km/year: ₹3-3.6 lakh annually and ₹15-18 lakh in 5 years.
parameters your car Cab (Ola/Uber)
Facility available whenever you want Waiting for booking, fear of driver canceling ride
economic burden Heavy investment and maintenance Pay as you use only
mantle piece Parking and traffic tension Can work or relax sitting in the back seat
hygiene completely clean and private Sometimes bad cars or bad smell

our advice

The break-even point can be considered to be around 1,200 to 1,500 kilometers per month. If your monthly distance is less than this and you want to avoid the stress of driving, then Ola-Uber is a more convenient and cheaper option. There is no need to make any big capital investment, there is no need to worry about parking and there is no hassle of maintenance. On the other hand, if you have a family, long trips on weekends or long daily distances, then having your own car will prove to be more practical and financially better.

Especially in Gurugram, considering the traffic, parking problems and expensive parking charges, many people adopt hybrid model. Mainly use of Ola-Uber and car when needed. Running costs are very low in EV cars, but the initial price and charging infrastructure still remain challenges. Ultimately the decision depends on your actual distance, comfort needs and financial situation. Note down your monthly travel and calculate both the options, only then the right decision can be taken.

This hybrid SUV will soon enter the Indian market.

Upcoming Hybrid Cars in India 2026: The demand for hybrid cars is increasing rapidly in the Indian auto market. Rising prices of petrol, stricter rules regarding pollution and government policies promoting green mobility are leading companies towards strong hybrid technology. Many major companies are going to launch hybrid models in 2026, which will offer both lower costs than electric mode in the city and the convenience of petrol on long drives.

These include Renault Duster Hybrid, Nissan Tekton Hybrid, Honda Elevate Hybrid and Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid. These models will cover mid-size SUV, compact crossover and budget segments, giving customers more options. These hybrid cars will not only increase the mileage but will also improve the driving experience. Let us know with which features and specifications it can be offered.

Renault Duster Hybrid

Duster Hybrid is one of the most talked about upcoming models. The new generation Duster has already been launched in 2026 with petrol variants and its price starts at ₹ 10.49 lakh. Its strong hybrid E-Tech 160 variant will arrive around Diwali 2026. It uses a 1.8-litre petrol engine along with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery pack, which will together produce around 160 hp power and 172 Nm torque.

The company claims that up to 80% EV-only driving is possible in the city. Estimated mileage may be around 23-25 kmpl. It will compete with hybrid SUVs like Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyrider. The demand for the hybrid variant was very high in pre-bookings, due to which the entire capacity for 2026 has already been booked. It is expected that its demand will increase further at the time of launch.

Nissan Tekton Hybrid

Nissan's new mid-size SUV will also be built on the CMF-B or RGMP platform, similar to the Duster. Its hybrid variant will also be equipped with the same 1.8-litre strong hybrid system as the Duster. The launch is expected to take place in late 2026. Tekton will come with bold design, premium features and good performance. Starting price may range between ₹ 11-22 lakh (ex-showroom). Together with Duster, it will compete strongly in the segment and strengthen Nissan's comeback in India.

Honda Elevate Hybrid

This is already a popular mid-size SUV, now it is going to become more attractive with the hybrid version. It is likely to be launched in the second half of 2026, especially during the festive season. It will use the City e:HEV's 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle hybrid system, which has two electric motors. Total power is expected to be around 125 hp and mileage could go up to 26-28 kmpl. Due to Honda's refined engineering, it will be ahead in comfort, silence and reliability. Its production has also started.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid

Maruti Suzuki will bring its in-house strong hybrid technology to the Fronx, which is expected to launch in early 2027. This series will be a hybrid system, in which the petrol engine will mainly work as a generator. According to reports, an excellent mileage of up to 35 kmpl can be achieved. With ADAS Level-2 features and possibly an AWD option, this could prove to be a game-changer in the budget hybrid segment. Fronx is already popular among the youth, the hybrid version will further increase its popularity.

Will you not be able to buy vintage cars in India, will scrap policy end this culture?

Will you not be able to buy vintage cars in India, will scrap policy end this culture?

New Delhi. From now onwards, companies will have to keep funds aside for the vehicles which are to be scrapped after 15-20 years. The government has made a provision for this in the scrap policy. According to reports, this is going to put additional pressure of Rs 25,000 crore on companies. This is because the company will have to reserve funds from now for the scrap expenses that it will incur after 20 years. The impact of the scrap policy on companies is obvious, but a big question has arisen for common buyers as well. Will scrap policy end the culture of vintage cars?

The number of people who like vintage cars is in crores. The group of people who like vintage cars are ready to pay more for them than a new car. But when the vehicles will be scrapped within 20 years, there will be a time when the old vehicles which can be called vintage will not survive. This fear is justified to a large extent but not completely. Let us understand what are vintage cars and what is their future in India?

Will vintage cars really die out?

The biggest fear regarding the scrap policy in India is that old vehicles will be destroyed. But actually the government has made separate rules for vintage vehicles. In India, vehicles older than 50 years are kept in vintage category. There is a separate registration system for such vehicles. If an owner keeps his car in good condition then there is no need to scrap it.

However, there is a restriction on the use of these vehicles. These cannot be driven on daily roads. But they are allowed to run during rallies, shows or special occasions. This means that the culture of vintage cars will not end, but their use will definitely be limited.

The real crisis is on vehicles 20 to 45 years old.

The biggest problem is for those vehicles which are between 20 to 45 years. These vehicles are neither new nor made vintage. For this reason, they may have to bear the maximum impact of the scrap policy. If these vehicles get destroyed midway, then the number of new vintage cars may reduce in future.

The biggest misconception in scrap policy

People feel that as soon as the vehicle completes 15 or 20 years, it will be forcibly taken away. It's not like that. The rule says that there will be a fitness test of the vehicle after 15 years. If the vehicle meets the pollution and safety standards, it can be re-registered. This means that if you maintain your car well, you can drive it for a long time. This is the way through which many vehicles can enter the vintage category after reaching 50 years. But one thing to remember here is that after some time the fitness test and maintenance of that vehicle will become comparatively expensive. The real test will begin here.

Option to hold registration and static inheritance

The government is also working on such options where the vehicle can be kept as static heritage. This means that you will not drive the car on the road, but can keep it safely with you. In this situation the rule of scrap will not apply to the vehicle. This vehicle may not be used for roads, but it can survive as a historical asset.

Electric retrofitting can become a new path

Electric retrofitting can be a big way to save old vehicles in future. In this, the petrol or diesel engine of the vehicle is removed and it is converted into electric. Due to this the vehicle fits the pollution norms and can remain in use for a long time. This trend is increasing rapidly in many countries and is slowly being adopted in India too.

Difference between common man and rich man

The impact of the scrap policy will not be equal on everyone. A rich person can maintain his expensive car for a long time. He can pay heavy registration fees or keep the car in the garage. But it is not easy for a common man. Vehicles like Maruti Alto, Swift or Hyundai i20 may hardly become vintage in future. Because after 20 years their maintenance and paying taxes can become expensive.

How does scrap policy work in the world?

India is not the only country where old vehicles are being tightened. Such rules are already in force in many countries of the world.

Country policy Important thing
America Cash for Clunkers Discount on buying a new car on giving old car
Europe ELV Directive It is necessary to recycle 95% of the vehicles.
Japan Recycling Law Fees are charged only at the time of purchasing the vehicle
China ELV Rules Focus on reducing pollution and metal re-use

It is clear from these examples that the purpose of scrap policy is not just to remove old vehicles. Its real objective is to reduce pollution and make better use of resources.

Only real lovers will be able to keep vintage cars

Scrap policy will not eliminate vintage cars, but will definitely make their path difficult. For those who can manage their vehicles, options are open. But this change will bring challenges for the common people. This is the reason why the number of old vehicles on the roads may reduce in the coming times, while real vintage cars will remain limited to only special people.
