Small SUV vs Big SUV: What is best according to budget, mileage and family? Know

Small SUV vs Big SUV: What is best according to budget, mileage and family? Know

Small SUV vs Big SUV: While buying a new car for their family, people often get confused whether a small SUV (Sub-compact/Compact SUV) will be right for them or a big SUV (Mid-size/Full-size SUV) is better. Today, there are excellent options available in the Indian automobile market in every budget and size, due to which it becomes a bit difficult to make the right choice. A car is not just a vehicle, but a part of family comfort, safety and travel memories.

Therefore, a hasty decision without understanding your needs may prove costly later. Do you have to deal with heavy city traffic every day, or go on long trips with the whole family every weekend? Come, let us understand in very simple language which SUV will prove to be perfect for you according to your budget, space and lifestyle.

Impact on budget and pocket

If your budget is between ₹ 8 lakh to ₹ 15 lakh, then small SUVs are the best option for you. In these you get sunroof, big touchscreen and excellent safety features even at a low price. At the same time, big SUVs usually start from ₹ 15 lakh and go up to ₹ 25-30 lakh or above. Not only the purchase price, but also the maintenance and insurance of small SUVs is much cheaper than big SUVs.

Mileage and performance

In today's time, fuel prices are skyrocketing, hence mileage is a big factor. Small SUVs usually have low CC (1.0L to 1.5L) engines, which give good mileage (about 15 to 20 km/l) both in the city and on the highway. In contrast, larger SUVs have heavier and more powerful engines. These vehicles will give you strong performance and excellent pickup, but due to heavy weight, their mileage is less (about 10 to 14 km/litre).

Space, seating and comfort

This is where the size of your family matters the most. If your family consists of 4 to 5 people, then the cabin of a small SUV and its 350-400 liter boot space will be enough for your weekend trips. But if you have a joint family or relatives often travel with you, then you should go for a 6 or 7-seater large SUV. Big SUVs not only offer more legroom and headroom, but you can also keep a lot of luggage by folding the third row.

Driving and parking convenience

If you live in a crowded city like Delhi-NCR, where there is a huge problem of traffic jams and parking, then a small SUV will prove to be a boon for you. It is very easy to turn them in narrow streets and park in small spaces. Large SUVs can be a bit challenging to handle in city traffic, however, their road presence and stability on the highways are excellent.

parameters Sub-compact / Compact SUV Mid-size / Full-size SUV
seating capacity mainly 5 seater 5, 6 and 7 seater options
estimated budget ₹8 lakh to ₹15 lakh ₹15 Lakh to ₹30 Lakh+
mileage High (15 – 20 km/l) Low (10 – 14 km/l)
Engine and Power 1.0L – 1.5L (Economic) 2.0L+ or Turbo (more power)
Parking and Driving good for urban traffic best for highway

What's better for you?

Buy a small SUV when you have a small family, budget is limited, most of the driving is within the city and you want better mileage. Buy a big SUV when you have a large or joint family, no budget issues, often go on long drives or off-roading and you want a strong look on the road.

Tata Sierra sales are decreasing with time.

Tata Sierra has made a comeback in the Indian market after a long wait. It was launched with a new avatar in late 2025. By combining the classic boxy design with a modern touch, Tata introduced it in the mid-size SUV segment. There was a lot of hype about this SUV at the time of its launch and a lot of credit goes to the marketing for this. However, about 6 months after the launch, the picture seems to be changing. The demand for Tata Sierra, which received 70,000+ bookings in the initial phase itself, is decreasing with time.

If we look at the figures, it is clear that even after 6 months, the company has not been able to garner as many customers as the number of people who sold Sierra at the time of launch. Factors like production constraints, market competition (Creta, Seltos) and possibly pricing/feature perception can be held responsible for the continuous decline in its sales. Let's take a look at its sales report (MOM) so far. We will also take a look at the design, engine and performance details.

This update will mainly focus on styling, features and some comfort enhancements. Honda has already launched City facelift and is planning to launch Elevate also this year. The graphics of the tail lamps at the rear may be revised, along with the option of edge-to-edge lightbar is also possible. New alloy wheels and revised fog lamp housings are also coming. The overall look will be more modern and premium, although the basic silhouette will remain the same.

Better materials, ambient lighting and improved NVH insulation are expected to give the interior a more premium feel. Comfort features like ventilated seats can come in standard or higher variants. The cabin space and 458 liters of boot space will remain as practical as before.

Features and Updates

Major updates are confirmed to include a 360-degree camera system. Things like wireless charging, a larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and possibly a powered driver's seat could be added. ADAS Level-2 can be further strengthened.

For safety, it will have 6 airbags, Honda Sensing ADAS (Adaptive Cruise, Lane Keep Assist), ESC, Hill Start Assist as standard. In the facelift, ADAS can be made radar-based and more advanced. Structural safety will remain as strong as before.

Its 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine (121 PS power, 145 Nm torque) will remain intact. Will be available with 6-speed manual and CVT automatic transmission. Mileage will be good (about 15-17 kmpl). Hybrid variant may come later, but for now petrol option will remain the main one. Performance will remain smooth and reliable. The price is expected to be between ₹11 lakh to ₹17 lakh. Maruti's new WagonR Flex Fuel launched! How different from normal WagonR? Know

Maruti Suzuki has launched its first flex fuel-powered car, Maruti Suzuki Flex Fuel, in the Indian market. It is India's first mass-market flex-fuel passenger car, which can run on E20 to E85 (and tested up to E100) ethanol-blended petrol. The normal Wagon R is mainly available with petrol (E20) or CNG options. Flex fuel version will increase eco-friendly fuel, support farmers and reduce dependence on imported oil.

If we compare it with the normal petrol version, the design, interior and most of the features of both the models are almost similar, but in flex fuel, the engine has been given special upgrades to deal with the corrosive effects of ethanol. The flex version is based on the ZXi+ MT and is costlier. Its ex-showroom price starts from around ₹ 7.24 lakh. Whereas, normal Wagon R is available in the range of ₹ 5-6.5 lakh. Let us know what is the difference between the two?

Design and interior

There is no big difference between the two models. The flex fuel Wagon R shares the same tall-boy stance, floating roof look (blacked-out C-pillar), vertical taillamps and 14-inch wheels as the normal Wagon R. The only difference is the fluorescent badging and side decals. Its length is 3655 mm, width is increased, wheelbase is 2435 mm. Parking of both is easy.

The interior of both is completely similar. Beige-black dual-tone cabin, spacious seating (5 people), good headroom and leg room. 7-inch touchscreen, steering-mounted controls, manual AC are available in all. Boot space is 341 litres. There are no additional changes in the flex version.

Features and safety

Both have 7-inch infotainment (Android Auto/Apple CarPlay), power ORVMs, tilt steering. Being based on the Flex Fuel top variant, some premium features are available as standard, but basic comfort is equal in both. 6 airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, hill hold assist and seatbelt reminder are standard on Flex Fuel. Variants with 6 airbags are also available in the normal Wagon R.

Engine and Performance

The normal Wagon R has two engine options, 1.0L (68 PS) and 1.2L K12N (90 PS, 113 Nm), which are available in MT/AMT option. The 1.2 liter K12N engine has been upgraded to flex fuel. Things like special injectors, fuel pump, lines, ECU and ethanol sensor are new in it. Power and torque are slightly better, but mileage may be lower on high ethanol blends. (ARAI- 25 kmpl in petrol mode) It can be bought only with 5-speed MT. At the same time, AMT is also available in normal 1.2L.

Petrol vs EV: Which car is best for daily office commuting? Understand with 5 year calculation

Petrol vs EV: Which car is best for daily office commuting? Understand with 5 year calculation

Petrol vs Electric Car: Choosing the right car for daily commute is a big decision for every working person. While petrol prices in the country remain around ₹ 100 per litre, on the other hand, electric vehicles (EVs) are attracting everyone's attention with their promise of low running costs. But is buying an EV really beneficial for everyone?

To solve this dilemma, we will understand the complete mathematics of the next 5 years by taking the example of India's most popular compact SUV Tata Nexon and Tata Nexon EV. From this calculation it will become clear to you that which car will be best according to your budget and needs for going to office daily?

Petrol Car vs EV: Daily expense of going to office

Let us assume that your car travels 40 kilometers daily, including the distance from your home to office and weekend travel. According to this, the monthly running of your vehicle will be around 1,200 kilometers and the annual running will be 14,400 kilometers. In 5 years your car will travel a total of 72,000 kilometers.

Tata Nexon Petrol: Its starting on-road price in Delhi starts from around ₹ 8.5 lakh. It gives a mileage of around 14 km/litre in the city. At the rate of ₹100 per liter of petrol, your expenditure on fuel alone in 5 years will be ₹5,14,285.

Tata Nexon EV: The on-road price of its base variant is around ₹ 13.2 lakh. On home charging at the rate of ₹ 8 per unit, this car runs at ₹ 1.1 to ₹ 1.4 per kilometer. In this way, the total cost of charging in 5 years will be only between ₹ 80,000 to ₹ 1,00,000.

5 Year Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

When buying an EV, you have to pay around ₹4 to ₹4.5 lakh more, which is called 'green premium'. Let us see what is the total cost of ownership including 5 years of service, insurance and fuel/charging-

Type of expenditure (5 year estimate) Tata Nexon Tata Nexon EV
Starting On-Road Price (Approx) ₹8,50,000 ₹13,20,000
Fuel/Charging Cost (72,000 km) ₹5,14,285 ₹96,000
Maintenance and service expenses (5 years) ₹60,000 ₹25,000
Insurance (5 years cumulative) ₹90,000 ₹1,25,000
Total Cost (5 Year TCO) ₹15,14,285 ₹15,66,000

Which car will be best for you?

It is clear from the calculation that if your running is 40 kilometers daily (14,000 km annually), then by the completion of 5 years the total cost of petrol and electric car becomes almost equal.

Electric car is best when: If your daily commute to office is more than 50 kilometers. In this situation, the EV will recover its extra cost (Break-even) in just 3.5 to 4 years and after that your huge savings will start. Also, one can enjoy silent and smooth driving without changing gears in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Petrol car is best when: If your daily running is less than 20-30 kilometers. In such a situation, it will take 7-8 years to recover the increased price of EV, which will be a loss-making deal. Apart from this, if there is no space for charging setup in your apartment, then petrol car is the most practical option for you.

Second Hand Car Buying Tips: Know important tips.

Buying a second hand car may seem like an attractive deal to many people, but it can be fraught with hidden dangers. Vehicles submerged in floods or heavy rains are often sold after appearing clean. In these, the engine, electrical system and other parts get damaged, which later causes expensive repairs. Such vehicles get damaged quickly, get rusted and can also prove to be dangerous for safety.

Even without a mechanic, you can identify a flood-damaged car with some easy tricks. By checking inside and out in just 2 minutes, you can avoid huge losses. VIN check, odor, water marks and hidden dirt indicate whether the vehicle has been a victim of flood or not. Follow the steps given below to be cautious during monsoon, take the right decision and save money.

Inspection of exterior and engine bay

Look in the engine compartment of the car with a flashlight. Be careful if there are traces of dried mud, slush or water in tight areas, behind the wiring harness, starter motor or power steering pump. Check for fog or water lines in headlights and taillights. If there is unusual rust on screws or bolts, especially on a car as old as new, this may be a sign of flooding.

Sniff test of interiors

Sit inside the car and see its smell. If there is a smell of mold or dampness inside, there may be a possibility of flood damage. Most air fresheners are used to hide bad smells. Pull the seat belt all the way. If there is soil or water stain below then there is a problem. Put your hand under the carpet and check for moisture, stains or rust. New carpet or upholstery casts doubt on an old vehicle.

Searching trunks and hidden places

Open the trunk and look for water lines, mud or dirt under the spare tire. Look for water marks or rusted screws on the dashboard, glove box and under the seats. Also check for dry mud under the doors and in the gaps of the body panels.

extra vigilance

Be sure to check the history report from a service like Carfax, AutoCheck or NICB by VIN number. Avoid driving in flood affected areas. If there is an electrical problem like lights or power windows not working properly then there is a high possibility that your car may be affected by flood.

By adopting these easy tricks, you can identify a flood-damaged car in 2 minutes. Do not be hasty in monsoon, avoid huge fraud by doing good checking and make safe deals only. Being hasty can cause huge losses to you.
