Euro NCAP safety protocols danger of touchscreens

Touch-based car controls are inherently dangerous; more physical touchpoints could improve safety.

Touchscreens in cars were quite a novelty when they were first introduced, but in just a few years, they have completely taken over car interiors. In recent years, carmakers have been cramming even the most basic operations into touch panels, and more often than not, the usability and functionality has gone south.

Lately, some carmakers have started moving back to physical controls, in limited ways. In fact, carmakers in Europe are actually being encouraged to stop using touchscreens for basic functions in order to enhance road safety. As per a report by The Times, Euro NCAP is set to introduce a new set of rules for crash testing in January 2026 that will require vehicles to have physical controls for basic functions in order to score a full 5-star safety rating.

  1. Euro NCAP set to introduce new rules in January 2026
  2. Point to be awarded for having physical controls
  3. The proposition is still a work-in-progress

“The overuse of touchscreens is an industry-wide problem, with almost every vehicle maker moving key controls onto central touchscreens, obliging drivers to take their eyes off the road and raising the risk of distraction crashes,” said Matthew Avery, director of strategic development at Euro NCAP, to The Times.

Under the new set of rules that could come into effect in 2026, vehicles will need to be fitted with physicals buttons, dials or stalks for operations such as turn signals, hazard lights, horn and windscreen wipers to be eligible for the maximum safety rating.

Tesla, for instance, has completely removed stalks for indicators and wipers on the Model S. Meanwhile, a touch panel for the HVAC controls or integrating them into the infotainment system is also pretty common these days; think of the latest Tatas, Volkswagens and Skodas in India which have a touch panel.

These systems, however, are not the most intuitive to use as users have reported. But why are carmakers pushing screens then? The answer is simple – cost. A single touchscreen panel – usually made of plastic – is much more cost effective to produce than an array of buttons and dials.

Do note that Euro NCAP testing is voluntary, and this does not in any way mean carmakers will mandatorily have to fit physical controls in cars. However, Euro NCAP is backed by several EU governments and several carmakers regularly use these crash test results in their marketing campaigns in order to attract more buyers, so it could have a wider implication. Any risk of points being deducted during such assessments is likely to be taken into consideration.

This, however, is still understood to be work-in-progress, and the exact evaluation procedures haven’t been finalised yet. Reportedly, carmakers have also been made aware of this proposition and they support it.

Even as Mercedes dials back its electrification plans globally, its Region Overseas head believes India should stay on the EV track.

Mercedes-Benz announced last month that it would continue to sell combustion-engined cars – even in some developed markets – well into the 2030’s, contrary to its plan of transitioning into an all-electric brand by 2030 ‘wherever market conditions allow’.

However, while the company may be dialling back its EV plans elsewhere, it believes that electrification should stay on the fast track in India. Sagree Sardien, head of Region Overseas, Mercedes-Benz Cars, says, “For the Indian market, I think the better strategy would be to go electric as opposed to go to plug-in hybrids.”

Mercedes-Benz sells just one plug-in hybrid model in India, the AMG GT 4-door coupe. But it has three electric models – the EQS, the EQB, and the EQE SUVs – with plans to introduce three more this year.

‘Indian market committed to EVs’

Sardien explained that she sees India as a market committed to EVs and thus advises that the country “takes the journey faster to battery electric vehicles”. Sardien is also confident that the EV market will continue to grow for the brand. “Whilst we are at 4 percent EV penetration in India, we anticipate double-digit penetration going forward,” Sardien said. For reference, globally, Mercedes EVs account for 19 percent of its total sales.

Mercedes India had record sales in 2023 selling 17,408 units, which is close to its current 20,000 production capacity limit. However, Sardien says the company is ready to cater to any changes in demand patterns and volume. “The plant in Pune has adequate capacity to be able to handle 20,000. If the market demand changes, of course, we have the flexibility, scalability and speed to adapt. So, if for some reason the Indian market accelerates faster than anticipated, we can scale up equally.” Currently, the EQB and EQE SUVs are both brought in as CBUs, whereas the EQS is assembled locally.

Automotive Design School India, automobile design India, postgraduate, masters course

Automotive Design School India, Automobile Design India

Will offer courses such as a Master’s in Automobile Design & Management, and refresher courses and inductions for CXOs.

India is set to get its first dedicated automobile design institute, the Indian School for Design of Automobiles (INDEA). Set to begin by late 2025, Xavier School of Management (XLRI) will set up the institute in collaboration with automotive expert Avik Chattopadhyay. It will be located at the XLRI Delhi-NCR campus.

About the Indian School for Design of Automobiles

The main highlight of the institute is the one-year Master’s degree in Automobile Design & Management. According to the institue’s management, the course will have a class size of 20-25 students from all graduate schools, who will be selected after a screening process. Apart from going into the nitty-gritty details of automotive design, students will also be trained in managing design teams. It is worth noting that the specifics of the curriculum are being finalised.

Apart from the master’s degree, there will also be refresher courses for automotive designers who want to fine-tune their skills, and inductions for chief experience officers (CXOs). The management is also considering offering a course on automotive restoration.

About the management

XLRI is one of the oldest business schools in the country, and together with their former student, Chattopadhyay, has decided ‘to bridge the gap for skilled designers who also understand the nuances of management and customer preferences, creating well-rounded professionals for the Indian automotive industry.

While Indian universities such as the National Institute of Design, the Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management offer some automotive-related programmes, there is no dedicated institute for automobile design in the country.

When asked about the recruitment problems faced in the Indian automotive design industry, Avik Chattopadhyay said, “The gap lies in the fact that schools are not specialised. Automotive designing ends up being one of the 17 or 21 courses that they offer. So, the industry ends up spending a lot of time making them unlearn and learn once again.”

Chattopadhyay went on to state that students will want to join INDEA because they will be able to get hands-on experience and it’ll also be a gateway into the industry.

Dr Fr K S Casimir, director of the XLRI Delhi-NCR campus, threw light on the importance of creativity not just in education, but also in the betterment of the country. He said, “Creativity, innovation and originality will ensure that a country leapfrogs to that superpower status. We want to imbue the entire management education with a kind of spirit where we are able to even blunder into creativity.”

Automakers hope to end FY24 on a positive note, shorter waiting periods ahead

Automakers hope to end FY24 on a positive note, shorter waiting periods ahead

  • Sales of passenger vehicles and two-wheelers posted a strong growth in February 2024.
Sales of passenger vehicles and two-wheelers posted a strong growth in February 2024.

The inordinately long waiting periods for passenger vehicles may be ending as the carmakers continued to produce a record number of vehicles in February 2024, building up stock in their respective dealerships, claimed a report by LiveMint. The increasing retail demand has been playing a crucial role for the automakers to push for higher vehicle production.

The report further stated that the carmakers in India are keeping a close watch on market demand, as inventories, which have already reached 26 days, are likely to pile up in the dealerships with the OEMs having been able to cater to the pending orders and incremental sales depending solely on the pace of fresh demand.

Passenger vehicles to see lower waiting period

The report quoted India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki’s Senior Executive Director Shashank Srivastava revealing that the Indian passenger vehicle industry expects to finish the current financial year with an 8.1 per cent growth rate at 42 lakh units.

In February 2024, the passenger vehicle segment in India recorded wholesales of 373,177 units as opposed to 335,324 units registered in February 2023, marking an 11.3 per cent year-on-year growth, Srivastava said. However, the retail numbers are lower than the wholesale figure, estimated to be around 335,900 units registered last month as compared to 301,900 units recorded in February 2023, which also registered an 11.3 per cent growth. However, the difference between wholesale and retail numbers was about 40,000 units, which have been added to the stock, revealed the Maruti Suzuki top official.

He also said that the stock level is now at 300,000 units, which is around 25-26 days of stock in the industry. “So far since July of last year, we have seen pending bookings significantly come down and stock in the channel had come down. But not only is it pretty high again, the luxury for OEMs to push wholesale against retail is not there anymore,” Srivastava reportedly said, further adding, “We saw that rural growth cumulatively was at 11.7 per cent between April and February, higher than growth in urban sales at eight per cent.”

SUVs driving growth in PV segment

SUVs have been driving demand and sales in the Indian passenger vehicle market, just like the rest of the global market. In February 2024 as well, SUVs accounted for more than 50 per cent of all passenger vehicle sales in India. Industry experts reportedly expect the SUV segment to contribute more than half of total passenger vehicle sales in the current financial year.

The launch of a host of new models in the last few months, and improved availability on the back of the eased supply chain have helped the automakers to post a strong growth in this segment.

Two-wheelers clock strong double-digit growth

Major two-wheeler manufacturers such as Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto have clocked a strong double-digit growth in February 2024, compared to the same month a year ago. However, registrations of two-wheelers grew at a much slower pace in February this year, at 13.2 per cent, claimed the report. This resulted in inventory addition at showrooms. The report also claimed that in the premium segment, higher demand helped Royal Enfield post a wholesale growth of a mere five per cent, whereas retail registrations shrank 1.3 per cent last month, compared to February 2023.

In the electric two-wheeler segment, sales remained flat in February 2024, reflecting a stagnation in demand. The report claimed that registrations of high-speed electric two-wheelers were up by 24 per cent on a year-on-year basis in February 2024. This was due to the extra day in February because 2024 is a leap year. However, the registrations in this category were flat last month compared to January at 81,963 units.

2024 F1 Bahrain GP results: Verstappen wins ahead of Perez, Sainz

2024 F1 Bahrain GP results: Verstappen wins ahead of Perez, Sainz

Sainz pulled off some spirited overtakes to finish third for Ferrari.

The 2024 F1 season opener in Bahrain proved one thing – that reigning world champion Max Verstappen still remains the driver to beat. The Red Bull driver cruised to victory, 22 seconds clear of teammate Sergio Perez. Carlos Sainz defeated his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc to secure the final spot on the podium.

  1. Verstappen wins, 22.457 secs ahead of Perez
  2. Sainz P3, Leclerc P4 for Ferrari

Verstappen takes dominant Bahrain GP

Starting from pole position, Verstappen held the lead into Turn 1 and there was no looking back throughout the 57-lap race. It was complete domination out at front – he pitted both times with sufficient gaps, crossed the chequered flag over 22 seconds clear of Perez and even secured a bonus point for setting the fastest lap.

“I think today went even better than expected. I think the car was really nice to drive, on every [tyre] compound I think we had a lot of pace. It was just super enjoyable to drive today, we really stayed out of trouble and it’s a great start to the year – it couldn’t have been better,” said Verstappen.

Sainz beats Leclerc to P3

Sainz may be out of a drive for next year, with Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari in 2025. The news may just a fueled a fire, with the Spaniard pulling off feisty overtakes on teammate Leclerc to grab third place.

Leclerc struggled with tyre degradation and locked up on several occasions, complaining about a brake issue. However, he did pick off George Russell in the closing stages to finish fourth.

Over at Mercedes, both Russell and Hamilton encountered battery issues. Hamilton at one point even reported a broken seat.  As a result, Russell had to settle for fifth place, while Hamilton finished seventh.

Both McLaren drivers finished in the points, with Lando Norris separating the two Mercedes drivers in P6 and Oscar Piastri in P8. The last two points-scoring spots were taken by Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll. The latter had to climb his way up the field after being spun around by Nico Hulkenberg on the opening lap.

F1 now heads to Jeddah for the Saudi Arabian GP on March 7-9. Just like Bahrain, the Saudi Arabia race will also be held on a Saturday.

Opinion: Maruti's upcoming hybrid tech is a masterstroke

Opinion: Maruti's upcoming hybrid tech is a masterstroke

Maruti’s upcoming hybrid tech is a masterstroke

A few days ago we broke the news of Maruti’s plans to introduce its series hybrid technology in India in more affordable offerings like the Fronx, next-gen Baleno and next-gen Swift, among others. And here’s why I think this technology is going to be a game changer in the truest sense.

Series hybrid vehicles, also referred to as range-extenders or self-charging electric vehicles, work in a manner that’s similar to an electric vehicle (EV). The battery-powered electric motor directly drives the wheels, with the only difference being that the battery doesn’t need to be plugged in; instead the models are fitted with on-board generators to recharge the battery. This generator is run by a petrol engine. A point to note is that its petrol engine never drives the wheels directly.

Where things get really interesting is that according to the Department of Revenue, an EV “that runs solely on electrical energy derived from an external source or from electrical batteries” qualifies under the 5 percent GST bracket.

Further, even the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), 1989 (amended in 2002) defines an EV “as a vehicle intended for road use, powered exclusively by an electric motor whose traction energy is supplied exclusively by a traction battery installed in the vehicle”.

There’s no mention of tailpipe emissions having been referenced or considered as a factor to define an EV. Which could technically define Maruti’s upcoming range-extenders as EVs, thus qualifying them for the lower GST slab.

This could give these upcoming Marutis a significant price advantage over other ICE cars in the market, including strong hybrids. Not only are these likely to be incredibly efficient, but their on-board generators will eliminate range anxiety associated with EVs, which could make this tech ideal for our market, where charging infrastructure remains at a nascent stage. The question is, will Maruti Suzuki be able to reap the benefits of this grey area in the rulebook and convince authorities to levy a lower GST rate? We’ll know very soon.

India’s largest four-wheeler manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, has announced sales figures for February. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 1,97,471 units, which consists of domestic sales of 163,397 units, sales to other OEMs of 5,147 units and exports of 28,927 units.

The compact segment was the most popular as the brand sold 71,627 units in February 2024. It consists of vehicles like Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S and WagonR. Then there were the utility vehicles, which consisted of Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, S-Cross and XL6. The sales figures stood at 61,234 units. Ciaz and Eeco sold 481 and 12,147 units, respectively.

Affordable compact vehicles such as Alto and S-Presso are still very popular as the brand sold a combined 14,782 units of those. The rest of the sales numbers come from Super Carry, which is a light commercial vehicle and sales to other OEMs.

From April to February, the most popular models for Maruti Suzuki were WagonR, Baleno and Swift. SUVs accounted for 51.5 per cent of overall sales for Maruti Suzuki.

The brand is currently preparing to launch a new generation of Swift in the Indian market. The hatchback has already been revealed in Japan and will soon be making its way to Indian shores. The hatchback will not only get some major cosmetic upgrades but it would also get an all-new engine.

The new engine is a three-cylinder unit as compared to the four-cylinder unit that we currently get in the Indian market. Suzuki says that this change has been done in favour of more low-end torque and more fuel efficiency. In the global market, the new engine comes mated to a CVT automatic transmission. It is expected that the Indian market will still get a 5-speed manual gearbox and an AMT transmission.

McLaren’s first PHEV drop-top gets upgrades that are destined for coupé; weighs just 1,457kg.

McLaren has revealed the Artura Spider as its first drop-top hybrid, ushering in more power and a raft of chassis and aerodynamic upgrades that will also be used on an updated version of the coupé.

  1. Artura Spider claimed to be the lightest convertible supercar in its class
  2. 3.0-litre V6 engine makes 19hp more
  3. o-100kph time matches the coupe’s 3.0 seconds

McLaren Artura Spider weighs only 1,457kg

The Artura Spider is claimed to be the lightest convertible supercar in its class “by as much as 83kg”, with its 1457kg kerb weight giving it the edge over the Maserati MC20 Cielo and Ferrari 296 GTS.

Extensive use of lightweight materials – such as carbonfibre for the folding hard-top – means it is just 62kg heavier than the current coupé version. The Ricardo-developed 120-degree 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine has been carried over but an ECU remap – which can be performed on the existing McLaren Artura – has given it a 19hp boost to 604hp.

Together with the 94hp axial flux motor in the gearbox, the total system output is now 699hp. That gives a power-to-weight ratio of 480hp per tonne and a 0-100kph time that matches the existing coupé’s, at 3.0sec. McLaren Artura Spider top speed is 330kph but McLaren chief engineer Andy Beale said the firm is “keen to do a chunk more than that”. The engine drives through an enhanced version of the eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which now shifts 25 percent faster. It is also equipped with a new function that allows the driver to spin the rear tyres up when planting the throttle from a standstill.

The Artura’s ‘emotional’ credentials are enhanced here by the addition of an electrically folding hard-top – framed in carbonfibre or with an electrochromic glass panel.

The roof can be operated at vehicle speeds of up to 50kph and deploys in as little as eight seconds, making it one of the fastest-folding of any convertible on sale. Because the roof mechanism sits where the engine cooling vent is on the coupé, air is extracted via new ducts. Particular attention has been paid to aerodynamics, with an 8mm foil on the windscreen smoothing airflow over the cabin. International deliveries of the Artura Spider and updated coupé will begin in the middle of this year, hot on the heels of the lightly refreshed GT and new 750S, which replaces the 720S.

McLaren India line-up

In our country, the Woking-based supercar maker retails the GT, the Artura and 750S. The Artura Spider is also expected to arrive in India, though it’s launch timeline is yet unknown.

Volvo confirms launch of EX30, EX90 EVs in India in 2025

  • Volvo currently offers two electric cars in India – the C40 Recharge and the XC40 Recharge.
Volvo EX90 electric SUV (left) is the Swedish carmaker’s flagship EV based on the XC90 SUV. Volvo EX30 (right) is the smallest electric car in the Swedish carmaker’s lineup.

Swedish auto giant Volvo has confirmed that it will launch two more electric cars in India by 2025. Staying true to its commitment to go EV-only manufacturer, Volvo will drive in the EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs to India by next year. The launch of these two electric cars were confirmed by Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director at Volvo India, on Tuesday. Volvo currently offers two electric cars in India – the XC40 Recharge and the C40 Recharge electric SUVs.

Volvo has not shared the exact launch timeline of the EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs. The carmaker has not confirmed which of these two models will hit the Indian shores first. However, Malhotra said that both the EX30 and EX90 will be brought to India as completely knocked-down (CKD) units for sale.

Volvo EX90:

Volvo EX90 electric SUV comes as the brand’s flagship EV, and it is based on the XC90 SUV. Unveiled back in November 2022, the electric SUV is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain offering two power and torque output levels. The base model churns out 408 bhp of power and 770 Nm of torque, while the higher variant generates 517 bhp power and 910 Nm of torque. Both variants are capable of running at a top speed of 180 kmph.

Volvo EX90 also comes with a Lidar system that comprises eight cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors around the car. These allow the car to detect small objects as far as 600 feet away anytime anywhere.

In terms of looks and features, the EX90 is offered with the carmaker’s iconic Thor’s Hammer LED headlights and a blanked-off grille like the XC40 Recharge. It also gets flush-fitting door handles, 22-inch alloy wheels, C-shaped split LED tail lamp.Volvo claims that the EX90 contains 15 per cent recycled steel, 25 per cent recycled aluminium, 48 kg of recycled plastics and bio-based materials. Inside, the electric SUV gets a 14.5-inch large, vertically-oriented touchscreen infotainment system powered by Google OS. The car gets 5G connectivity as standard, enabling over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Volvo EX30:

Volvo EX30 is the smallest electric car in the Swedish carmaker’s lineup. Launched last year in global markets, the electric SUV is the quickest among all EVs in Volvo’s lineup with ability to sprint 0-100 kmph in just 3.4 seconds. The EX30 comes with a closed grille and the Volvo logo at the front. The LED headlights have the signature Thor hammer shape, while at the rear, the taillights wrap around the tailgate as well as part of the C-pillar. The interior too has a very minimalist design. Dominating the cabin are two elements – the steering wheel which is flat at the top and bottom, and the central 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

Volvo EX30 will be offered with two choices of battery pack. The basic version is with a single motor which can churn out 272 hp of power. It comes equipped with a 51 kWh battery that helps the electric SUV to offer 344 kms of range on a single charge. There is also an Extended Range version using the same motor, but has a larger 69 kWh battery pack. It promises to offer 480-km range. The top of the range Twin Motor Performance version comes with dual electric motor and generates 428 hp of power. It can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.4 seconds, faster than any Volvo ever. It can offer 460 kms of range on a single charge.

According to our dealer sources, since the introduction of the RWD model, the 4WD demand has dropped considerably. This is reflected in the waiting periods, with the 4WD models demanding a waiting period of 4-5 months, and the diesel RWD models, a wait of almost 1 year. The launch of the Thar Earth Edition could be seen as a move by Mahindra to increase the number of Thar 4WD sales

Ceat Indian Supercross Racing League winners: BigRock Motorsports wins title in Bangalore

BigRock Motorsports clinched the title in three categories with Matt Moss (450cc international), Reid Taylor (250cc international), and Thanarat Penjan (250cc India-Asia mix).

Rally heavyweight CS Santosh’s team BigRock Motorsports has been crowned the first-ever winner of the Ceat Indian Supercross Racing League (ISRL). The team clinched the title in dominant fashion on home turf, after the farmer’s protest forced a last-moment change in venue from Delhi to Bengaluru.

  1. Matt Moss defeats Jordi Tixier by four points in 450cc international class
  2. BigRock Motorsports outscored Mohite’s Racing Team by 82 points

Indian Supercross Racing League winners

For its inaugural season, the ISRL featured four different classes – 450cc international, 250cc international, 250cc India-Asia mix and, finally, Junior 85cc. Some big names from the Indian racing community – including CS Santosh and Arjuna award winner Gaurav Gill – along with brands like Reise Moto, fielded their own teams. Honda, KTM and Kawasaki provided the bikes for different teams.

Heading into the finale, BigRock Motorsports held a lead of 50 points over former Volkswagen Motorsport factory driver Dhruv Mohite’s team. The other teams put up a tough fight at the finale, with BB Racing’s Jordi Tixier, SG Speed Racers’ Hugo Manzato, BB Racing’s Athison Ruadreo and Mohite’s Racing Team’s Ben Prasit Hallgren all scoring wins. Tixier even made it a clean sweep after winning the All Stars race, featuring the top finishers from the senior classes.

But BigRock Motorsports played the team game, pushing just enough to avoid any unnecessary errors. And it paid off, with the team emerging as the champion in all three classes, outscoring Mohite’s Racing Team by a massive 82 points.

Matt Moss defeated Tixier by just four points to win the 450cc international title. Reid Taylor took home the 250cc international trophy after defeating Manzato by 15 points. And finally, Thanarat Penjan outscored Ruadreo by 10 points to win the 250cc India-Asia mix title.

Speaking about the road ahead for BigRock Motorsports, now that the first season has wrapped up, Team Principal Ashok George said,  “We’ve been running in-house races for a while and this [racing in ISRL] extends that storyline that we’ve built. So, in that sense it is a very long-term plan for us and a big part of that is tying up with our partners all around the world, creating a rider development programme that is comprehensive.”

“With a lot of the guys and girls that we have now, over the course of the first season we have seen a massive improvement in how they ride. So, we are hoping that we can keep that going.”

BB Racing finished third overall, followed by SG Speed Racers in fourth, Reise Motorsports in fifth and Gujarat Trailblazers in sixth place.

Despite the last-minute change of venue, over 8,000 spectators turned up at the Bengaluru finale. “We have set a new global record with the maximum physical representation anywhere in the world for a Supercross event,” said Veer Patel, co-founder of the ISRL.

“It gives me immense pleasure to see our collective dream to take shape in reality. I am confident that with the support of FMSI, FIM, racing teams and all partners we will make India as the focal point for Supercross in the world.”

VinFast walks Tesla route in India, seeks import duty cut for electric cars

Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast has approached the Indian government with a request to temporarily reduce import duties on its cars for approximately two years, a report by Reuters stated. This move aims to facilitate customer acceptance of VinFast’s products until the company’s local manufacturing plant becomes operational.

The request aligns with VinFast’s strategy to establish a presence in India, similar to the approach taken by American EV giant Tesla, which had also expressed interest in a duty reduction but faced a denial from the Indian government.

VinFast is currently in the process of constructing a manufacturing facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The company’s India CEO, Pham Sanh Chau, has indicated that production is slated to commence by mid-2023, initially focusing on domestic sales before venturing into exports. VinFast’s investment plans in Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with the state government, entail a total investment of up to $2 billion, with an initial commitment of $500 million for the first five years of operations.

VinFast, akin to Tesla, has urged the Indian government to reconsider the 100% import duty on fully-built EVs, a stance that has been met with opposition from domestic automakers. While India, as the world’s third-largest vehicle market, is contemplating the requests, no definitive decision has been reached yet, as per a government official.

Also Read : Centre yet to finalise import tax on EVs as Tesla gets ready for India

Chau highlighted VinFast’s proposal for a temporary reduction in import duty, suggesting bringing it down to 70% to 80% for a limited number of cars over two years. This approach, he believes, will help Indian customers acclimatise to VinFast’s offerings. While the central government deliberates on this proposal, VinFast remains committed to advancing its manufacturing facility’s construction.

India’s EV market is still nascent, accounting for just about 2% of total car sales in the previous year. However, the federal government has set an ambitious target of achieving a 30% market share for EVs by 2030, and is actively working on programs to attract EV manufacturers.

VinFast’s Tamil Nadu project is expected to have an annual capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles, complementing its main plant in Vietnam with a capacity of 250,000 vehicles annually. The company is already collaborating with around 55 Indian dealers to establish a robust sales network and is also considering introducing its two-wheeler models in the country in the future.

Mecides replica cars; Porsche Cayenne, Ford Bronco, Mercedes G Wagen, Aston Martin DBX

Portfolio of all-electric, near-life-size replicas made by Mecides include Porsches, Mercs, Aston Martins, Land Rovers, Fords, Volkswagens and more.

In recent years, Chinese automakers have been working hard to change the negative stereotype of being called copycats – at least in terms of design – by coming up with relatively more original creations. However, certain companies in China continue to take advantage of the relaxed copyright laws, allowing them to use copyrighted designs without seeking the original creator’s permission.

One such company is Mecides, a new startup that is pushing the boundaries of replica design with its range of mini electric trucks and SUVs, which often resemble miniatures of well-known models. The lineup is vast and includes luxury models, rugged trucks, and mainstream cars and SUVs. Despite their obviously different dimensions, it appears that all of the EVs share the same basic underpinnings, making the choice among them a matter of personal preference.

‘Premium’ offerings

Rangie Sport or Maruti Brezza?

One of the most interesting parts of Mecides’s lineup is its range of luxury car replicas. These unusual designs may not fool anyone into thinking you actually own an original, but their resemblance to their much pricier counterparts is remarkable. For example, the Mecides MBJD draws inspiration from the 2009 Bugatti 16C Galibier Concept, complete with a chrome-finished horseshoe grille and LED headlamp setup. Other notable replicas include minis of Porsche models like the Cayenne and Macan, Aston Martin’s DBX, and the Maserati Grecale. A fun fact about the Grecale lookalike is that it features a Porsche-style emblem on its nose, leaving owners to source the correct Trident logo themselves. Additionally, Mecides offers a mini that looks like the Range Rover Sport, but also bears a striking resemblance to the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.

‘Rugged’ replicas

RAM 1500 replica really gives off Toyota and Mahindra vibes.

Moving on to the rugged truck category, Mecides offers replicas that resemble various popular models. The Ford Bronco mini, for example, looks like a revamped Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, complete with an oversized grille and headlights that contrast the tiny wheels. The Mercedes G-Wagen replica is also noteworthy, although its underlying platform is claimed to be based on the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. For truck enthusiasts, Mecides has replicas of the Ram 1500 and the Toyota Tundra, both of which have been given a Chinese makeover. However, the Ram 1500 replica’s design also gives off a Mahindra Scorpio N and Toyota Hilux-like air.

‘Mass-market’ replicas

That’s supposed to be the Volkswagen ID.4.

Mecides also offers replicas of mainstream models, including the Mini Countryman JCW, Volkswagen ID.4, and Smart #1, all of which are fully electric. The replicas get a comfortable five-seater cabin. Each interior is equipped with a digital cockpit that mirrors the style of its respective model, although with cheaper materials.

Smaller, shorter and power(less)

The hatchback models range from 3,050mm to 3,800mm in length, while the long-wheelbase trucks can stretch up to 4,800mm. Despite their small size, all of these EVs come equipped with four-wheel disc brakes and conventional suspension parts. In some cases, power comes from a single 14hp electric motor, while in others, a 27hp motor is used. These numbers are comparable to heavy quadricycles in Europe, but the Chinese EVs weigh about 700kg, making them heavier and, likely, slower. The battery packs have a capacity of 26kWh, with driving ranges between 300km and 800km, depending on the version.

Mecides has not disclosed pricing details, but the company is currently accepting orders. While Mecides may not match established automakers in terms of originality or innovation, it serves a different market segment. With its relatively affordable replicas of popular models, it offers consumers the chance to enjoy the style and presence of luxury or mainstream models at a fraction of the price.

Which one of these replicas would you spend good money on? Let us know your favourite (or the least favourite) in the comments below.

Emraan Hashmi is celebrating his last movie release, Tiger 3, which has been a hit at the box office, and the actor certainly knows how to do it style. The actor was recently seen taking delivery of his new Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge adding the opulent luxury saloon to his garage. The Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge is as exclusive as they come in the exotic world with on-road prices stretching well over 12 crore.

The images show an all-black Rolls-Royce Ghost rolling into Hashmi’s residence while the actor was spotted taking a ride in his newest prized possession. Not many would know but Emraan has an affinity towards cars and has had the Lamborghini Huracan, Range Rover, Mercedes-Maybach S560 and more.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge though sits on top of the automotive pyramid. The Black Badge version adds a special paint option to the car, giving it a pristine look. Under the paintwork is a lightweight aluminium spaceframe architecture shared with the new-generation Phantom VIII. The styling remains instantly recognisable but the new-gen Ghost now gets sleeker headlamps with laser-light technology and C-shaped LED DRLs. The profile retains the sloping roofline while the rear sports a new bumper and LED taillights. The Black Badge adds carbon alloy composite wheels.

The cabin is equally opulent on the Ghost Black Badge with the special model adding Turchese Leather and Technical Carbon veneer. You continue to get the star headliner and the best of craftsmanship inside the car. Rolls-Royce uses about 100 kg of soundproofing material inside the Ghost, while a soft background noise was added to mitigate the complete silence.

Emraan Hashmi Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge
The new Rolls-Royce Ghost BB joins Hashmi’s garage that has had a number of exotics including the Lamborghini Huracan, Range Rover, Mercedes-Maybach and more (HT Auto)

Power on the Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge comes from the 6.75-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 engine tuned for 592 bhp and 900 Nm of peak torque. The Black Badge makes slightly more power and torque over the standard version with the torque kicking in from just 1,600 rpm onwards. This allows the Ghost BB to be quick despite its weight of around 2.5 tonnes. 0-100 kmph comes up in 4.8 seconds while the top speed is electronically limited to 205 kmph. The Ghost gets an automatic transmission with power going to all four wheels for better traction.

Interestingly, Emraan Hashmi is the second actor from the Yashraj Films Spy Universe to get his hands on a Rolls-Royce Black Badge. Previously, actor Shah Rukh Khan added the Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge to his garage last year following the success of Pathaan.
