Aprilia RS 457 price, India launch, booking details

Aprilia RS 457 price, India launch, booking details

Bookings open on December 15 for Aprilia’s first made-in-India bike; deliveries to start from March 2024.

After pulling the covers off the RS 457 a few months ago and showcasing it at the Indian MotoGP round, Aprilia has finally launched the bike in India at Rs 4.1 lakh, ex-showroom, Maharashtra. Do note, this is not an introductory price.

RS 457: First made-in-India Aprilia bike

The Aprilia RS 457 is made entirely in India at its Baramati facility and will also be exported to other countries from our shores. Powering the RS 457 is a liquid-cooled, 457cc, parallel-twin engine, making 48hp. Unlike most parallel-twin engines in this neck of the woods, the RS 457’s engine uses an uneven 270-degree firing order, which should result in a fruity exhaust note while maintaining high refinement levels. The RS 457 comes with three riding modes – Eco, Rain and Sport – and is also equipped with on the fly adjustable traction control.

This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch, and a quickshifter will be offered as an optional extra. Similar to the larger RS 660, the Aprilia RS 457 uses an aluminium perimeter frame suspended by a USD fork and monoshock. Suspension is adjustable for preload at both ends.

The RS 457 is the first bike that rolls on the TVS Eurogrip Protorq Extreme tyres from the factory. Tyres sizes are 110/70-R17 (front) and 150/60-R17 (rear). Braking duties are courtesy of ByBre with a 320mm front disc and a 220mm rear disc. The 5-inch TFT dash and the switchgear on the RS 457 are very similar to the larger Aprilia bike, and overall this bike exudes a feeling of quality and premiumness.

At its Rs 4.1 lakh (ex-showroom, Maharashtra) asking price, the Aprilia RS 457 is more expensive than the KTM RC 390 (Rs 3.18 lakh), but much more affordable than the Rs 5.24 lakh Kawasaki Ninja 400. Bookings will open on December 15, but deliveries will only begin from March 2024. Test ride vehicles will be available from January 2024 onwards, at select dealerships.

Kia Sonet price, diesel-manual powertrain, new features, trims and variants

Kia Sonet price, diesel-manual powertrain, new features, trims and variants

Will be offered alongside iMT gearbox; petrol powertrain lineup to remain unchanged.

Following a couple of official teasers from Kia, a leaked brochure on the internet now gives us all details of the upcoming Sonet facelift. Set to debut on December 14, the new Sonet will get design updates and a refreshed interior with new features, but the leaked brochure also reveals a key mechanical update – the diesel-manual powertrain is set to make a comeback on the compact SUV.

  1. Sonet diesel to get MT, iMT and AT gearboxes
  2. Sonet will continue to be offered in Tech line, GT Line and X-Line trims
  3. Will get ADAS suite, 360-deg camera, new digital instrument cluster

Kia Sonet facelift powertrain options

The Sonet was previously available with a diesel-manual powertrain at launch, but Kia later swapped it with an iMT semi-auto gearbox. In fact, the company, along with sister brand Hyundai, adopted a clear strategy where the former would only be offering iMT gearboxes with its diesel engine while the latter will offer a regular manual gearbox. Likewise, the manual gearbox was also discontinued on the Carens and Seltos.

With the facelift, however, Kia will be bringing back a regular manual gearbox to the diesel engine lineup. While the iMT gearbox has its conveniences, the lack of even the option of a manual gearbox is likely to have deterred some buyers. This leads us to believe that the manual gearbox could also make a return on the Carens and Seltos.

Meanwhile, the iMT and torque converter automatic gearboxes with the diesel engine will continue as is. The petrol powertrain lineup will also remain unchanged – a 1.2-litre petrol mated to a manual gearbox and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mated to either the iMT gearbox or a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

Kia Sonet facelift trim and features

As before, the Sonet will continue to be offered in three distinct trim lines – Tech Line (HTE, HTK, HTK+, HTX, HTX+), GT Line (GTX+) and X-Line. The 1.2-litre petrol engine will be available only on the Tech Line trims while the turbo-petrol and diesel engines will be available across the lineup. Each trim line will also have its own unique styling elements and interior upholstery options.

The Sonet will also see several new feature additions such as 360-degree camera, ADAS suite, new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, powered front driver’s seats as well as traction modes for the automatic variants. Most of these features, however, will be limited to the higher-spec trims. To read more about the exterior and interior updates, click here.

Ola Electric slashes sales targets ahead of IPO launch, say sources

Ola Electric slashes sales targets ahead of IPO launch, say sources

India’s Ola Electric has slashed its sales goals for 2023-2025 by more than half and delayed its target of achieving profits by a year, after reduced government incentives pushed up e-scooter prices, according to a document and two sources with direct knowledge of the company’s finances.

By: Reuters
| Updated on: 06 Dec 2023, 16:42 PM

Ola Electric, India’s largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer, is planning to cut down its sales targets ahead of its IPO launch.

The scaling back of Ola’s targets comes ahead of its $700 million stock market debut plan, even though the SoftBank-backed company, which likens itself to Tesla in the West, continues to lead the small yet fast growing e-scooter market. In a surprise move in May, India’s government cut cash incentives available for e-scooter buyers without giving an explanation. Ola’s CEO Bhavish Aggarwal at the time said the reduced incentive would be a “short-term blip” for sales, and the company said the move would “have no impact on volumes”.

A document seen by Reuters with Ola’s latest financial projections shows it now expects to record 300,000 e-scooter sales in the ongoing fiscal year to March 2024, two-thirds lower than the earlier goal of 882,000 which Reuters reported in July.

The revenue target for the ongoing fiscal year period is now $591 million, versus the earlier goal of $1.55 billion – a cut of about 60%, according to the internal document.

In a statement, Ola did not acknowledge the document or comment on the cuts to internal forecasts. It said future financial targets were “yet to be verified”.

“This is completely confidential information of the company,” Ola said.

Also Read : Tesla on two wheels? Ola Electric faces after-sales service challenges as demands surge for EVs in India

The targets have been lowered because of the government’s lower subsidy, said two sources with direct knowledge of the company’s finances, who declined to be named citing confidentiality.

“The new numbers have been toned down so the company is able to meet or exceed them … that is what investors want to see,” said one of the sources.

EV Goals

While Ola is launching new scooters, parts of its nationwide network of over 400 service hubs which maintain and repair its EVs are showing signs of strain after a surge in sales, Reuters reported last month.

India e-scooters sales nearly tripled to over 700,000 during 2022-23 versus the previous year, with Ola a market leader, but the sales were still a fraction of 15 million plus two-wheelers sold in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants 70% of all new two-wheeler sales to be electric by 2030. India now offers 15% of the price before tax as incentives for e-scooters, compared with 40% earlier, leading to higher prices.

Before the government incentive cuts, Ola, still loss-making, was expecting to record its first operating profit of $220 million in the ongoing 2023-24 fiscal year. The revised targets in the document show it will record an operating loss of $92 million this year, and a profit of $111 million next year.

Sales will also rise but at a far slower pace than earlier predicted.

Ola will sell 900,000 units in 2024-25 and 2.3 million units in 2025-26, the new document showed. Those targets are 60% and 21% lower than earlier estimates when incentives were in place.

On Saturday, Ola’s Aggarwal slashed prices of his entry-level e-scooter by about 20% to around $1,100 to boost their appeal and bring more people into the EV fold, adding that lower government incentives were not a worry.

“People had feared the e-scooter industry will be hit due to government incentive cuts. Industry has more than recovered,” Aggarwal said.

The states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are facing severe threats due to Cyclone Michaung making landfall. We’ve seen footage across social media of Chennai flooded in most areas and the event will go on to uproot several homes and livelihoods over the next few days. About 9,500 people have been evacuated so far from the coastal areas and the number could increase further based on the impact of the cyclone. Amidst all of this, it’s important to remember that your car or two-wheeler needs protection as well.

Chennai is currently reeling with heavy rainfall due to Cyclone Michaung (PTI)

With your vehicle standing exposed, it’s necessary to essential steps to minimise damages and the hassle of claiming insurance or repairing the vehicle later. So what can you do to mitigate such a situation? We’ve put together seven quick tips that can you try to minimise the damage to your vehicle during floods or cyclones.

Tips to protect your car from total damage during floods

1. Park at higher ground

One of the simplest things you can do is park on higher ground in case of an impending flood or cyclone. If you live in a high-rise with multi-storeyed parking, this is rather easily done. However, you can also look at public parking spaces that will keep your car protected in the event of a storm. Of course, always look for options that are closer in proximity to your nearest safe zone.

2. Evacuate early

If you think you won’t be able to make it to higher ground in time, make sure to evacuate the car at the earliest. This is all the more necessary if you see water levels rising. Grab all the necessary belongings in your vehicle and try to keep them in a single bag so your hands are free. Try to move your vehicle to the side of the road if you can so it isn’t blocking the path later once the water levels recede. It also ensures your vehicle is protected from other impacts.

3. Disconnect the battery

If you are evacuating from the vehicle, it’s important to disconnect the battery to prevent any electrical damage to the car later. This will save you a major chunk of costs in repairs later. Also, make sure that the doors are locked, the windows are rolled up and the sunroof closed, so there’s little chance of water seeping into the cabin.

4. Cover the vehicle, create a barrier

Cover the vehicle with a car’s cover or use a tarpaulin sheet cover to do the same. Additionally, use can use sandbags, should you find any at that moment to create a barrier to divert the water away from the vehicle.

5. Go slow, keep revving

If you find yourself stuck in a flood-ridden area with the water levels rising, it makes sense to keep the vehicle going with some added pressure on the accelerator. The idea is to keep the water out of the exhaust and engine. You also don’t want the vehicle to stall while the water levels are knee-deep. A submerged area would also mean low traction and going slow will give you better control over the situation.

6. Don’t crank the vehicle when submerged

On the occasion that your vehicle stalls when driving through a flooded area, it’s best that you push it to the side instead of trying to restart it again. Cranking the car while the exhaust and engine are submerged will only increase the chances of the water damaging the engine by entering the chamber through the air intake. This will cause your engine to seize and that’s a hefty repair bill, which can be completely avoided.

7. Keep your insurance details handy

Natural calamities are unexpected and there’s not much you can do to fight it. However, you can prepare yourself by buying the right insurance with complete coverage. Third-party insurance does not cover vehicle damage and you will need to opt for a comprehensive policy. In events such as a flood or cyclone, the premium is worth it. Additionally, keep the details handy, preferably in a digital format with a physical copy in the car that will ensure you can reach out to the right people and smoothen the claims process.

Mid-life update for the Creta will bring new styling, along with more features and safety tech.

The long-awaited Hyundai Creta facelift will make its global debut on January 16, 2024. Hyundai’s blockbuster SUV will then see a market launch by early 2024. The Creta facelift for India will have unique exterior styling, along with more features and tech in order to bring it at par with its rivals.

  1. Creta facelift will be loaded with tech
  2. Engine line-up to include two petrols, one diesel
  3. Will go on sale early next year

Hyundai Creta facelift: what’s new

The current-gen Creta has been around in India since 2020, and it’s been on sale in a few markets abroad. With its gradual introduction in other countries, Hyundai updated the Creta’s front fascia with a Tuscon-like nose – Hyundai calls the design called Parametric Hidden Lights. However, this version of the Creta never made it to India, but it is on sale currently in the Middle-East and some ASEAN markets.

Going by the spy shots, the refreshed Creta for India that will go on sale early next year will get completely different front and rear styling. That should bring its design more in-line with newer Hyundai models like the Exter, the new Santa Fe, and the Palisade.

The Creta facelift will come with an updated bumper, revamped tailgate and H-shaped LED DRLs like the Exter sub-compact SUV. Besides this, the Creta facelift will also get a split-unit vertical headlamp design with cube-like detailing and an updated front grille.

There will not be major changes to its sides, except for some minor tweaks and new alloy wheel designs. There have also been sightings of Creta facelift test mules with larger 18-inch wheels from the Alcazar, which could mean that the updated SUV could sport larger wheels on some variants.

Talking about the features, the updated Creta will come with an ADAS bundle and a 360-degree camera, like the Seltos. While there are no major interior changes expected, new shades for the upholstery and some minor changes here and there are in the pipeline. The 10.25-inch infotainment screen will likely continue on the updated Creta.

Hyundai Creta facelift: powertrain options

With this facelift, the new 160hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will finally make its way to the Creta. The same engine powers the Kia SeltosHyundai AlcazarHyundai Verna and the Kia Carens. Gearbox choices are expected to be a 7-speed DCT gearbox and with a manual gearbox. The other engine options include a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine; both powerplants churn out 115hp.

Hyundai Creta facelift: launch timeline, rivals

Once the refreshed Creta goes on sale in India, it will continue to rival the likes of the Kia SeltosHonda ElevateMaruti Suzuki Grand VitaraToyota HyryderSkoda KushaqVolkswagen Taigun and MG Astor. The Alcazar, which is the three-row version of the Creta, is expected to get a facelift thereafter.

Future BMW iX electric SUV could get new battery promising nearly 1,000 km range

Future BMW iX electric SUV could get new battery promising nearly 1,000 km range

BMW is working with a Michigan-based energy storage technology company named Out Next Energy (ONE), which announced that it used a battery on a BMW iX test car, which achieved nearly a 1,000-kilometre range on a single charge. Interestingly, BMW is one of the major investors in the company, which makes us think that the German luxury car brand that is aiming big with its EV strategy may introduce a new battery to the future iX electric SUVs, which will enable the cars to run nearly 1,000 kilometres on a single charge.

| Updated on: 04 Dec 2023, 16:59 PM

BMW iX currently offers a 372-kilometre range, which can be extended to nearly 1,000 kilometres with new battery technology.

BMW is one of the leading car manufacturers globally that has been aggressively working on electric vehicles. The automaker has already launched multiple electric cars across different segments globally, including India as well. One of the BMW electric cars is the iX SUV, which is available in India alongside some other global markets. The BMW iX currently offers a 372-kilometre range on a single charge. However, ONE claims that with its Gemini dual-chemistry battery, the electric SUV can get a massive boost, enabling it to run nearly thrice the range compared to the current model.

The battery technology company has claimed that its Gemini battery is rated at 450 Wh/l of volumetric energy density, while the energy content is more than 185 kWh in the same space allotted to typical passenger electric vehicles’ packs.

Meanwhile, BMW has applied for a trademark for the iM3 nomenclature, which fuelled speculation that the automaker is working on a performance-focused electric vehicle under its M division, possibly an all-electric M3. However, BMW M boss Frank van Meel has revealed that despite the trademark filing, the automaker will not make an electric performance car named iM3. On the other hand, he also said that an electric M3 is a viable option for the automaker.

Honda CB350 price, Hness CB350 recall in India

Honda CB350 price, Hness CB350 recall in India

Both models also have a recall issued for the bank angle sensor which can cause the bike to stall unexpectedly.

Honda has issued a recall for its H’ness CB350 and CB350RS neo retro roadsters for concerns regarding the models’ brake light and the bank angle sensor.

The company says an improper process being followed during manufacture of the rubber parts of the brake light switch there are chances of cracks developing. This may lead to water entry and corrosion inside, leading the light to malfunction. For this issue, bikes manufactured between October 2020 – January 2023 are affected.

Honda H’ness CB350 recalled over transmission issue

The other point of concern in this recall campaign is related to the bikes’ bank angle sensor. Honda claims this issue has arisen due to ‘inappropriate molding’ of the sensor housing, which can lead to a gap in sensor body sealing which might allow water to enter inside the bank angle sensor. This leads to chances of possible sensor malfunction and even the bike stalling in a worst-case scenario. Units manufactured between October 2020 to December 2021 are affected by this issue.

Replacement of these affected parts will be carried out at BigWing dealerships across India starting from the second week of December. The replacement will be done free of cost irrespective of the warranty status of the vehicle.
